Understanding Eustachian Tube Dysfunction

The eustachian tube connects the nasal airway to the middle ear. When the eustachian tube becomes inflamed due to allergies or infections, it can swell fully shut for days, weeks, or months. As the pressure behind the eardrum builds, it creates a vacuum effect, pulling fluid into the middle ear, leading to muffled hearing, pressure, and severe pain. For some patients, nasal sprays or steroids are enough to help alleviate inflammation. However, balloon dilation of the eustachian tube may be necessary.

Effective ETD Treatment With Acclarent AERA

Acclarent AERA is a minimally invasive in-office procedure that helps alleviate the symptoms of ETD by expanding the eustachian tube with a balloon. First, the catheter enters through the nasal cavity until it reaches the entrance of the eustachian tube. The balloon is fed through the length of the eustachian tube and then filled with air. As the balloon expands, it helps open the airway, alleviating pressure and providing relief. The balloon dilation of the eustachian tube (BDET) procedure is performed under local anesthetics.

What Can I Expect After My BDET Procedure?

For more than 10 years, ENT specialists have used BDET to safely and effectively reduce inflammation in the eustachian tubes. By improving the baseline in ET function, we can ease swelling, lessen the likelihood of future fluid accumulation, and reduce ear infections. Most patients experience a significant improvement immediately, and symptoms will ease daily. BDET often results in a noticeable reduction in ear fullness, pressure, and muffled hearing–naturally and without tubes.
