ENT (Ear, Nose and Throat) physicians, also called otolaryngologists, treat a wide range of conditions including hearing loss, ear infections, sinus problems, nasal congestion, allergies, snoring and sleep apnea, throat disorders, voice problems, thyroid conditions, and head and neck masses. At West Texas ENT, Dr. Acevedo also specializes in minimally invasive procedures including radiofrequency ablation of thyroid nodules, balloon sinuplasty for chronic sinusitis, radiofrequency treatment of the nasal valve for nasal breathing problems and radiofrequency treatment of the posterior nasal nerve for chronic post nasal drip and cough. He is the only physician in Abilene performing hypoglossal nerve stimulation for sleep apnea (the Inspire procedure) and radiofrequency ablation of the thyroid.
In many cases, a referral is not required to schedule an appointment with our office. However, some insurance plans do require a referral from your primary care physician. We recommend checking with your insurance provider before your visit. If you're unsure, our staff is happy to help you verify your benefits.
Your first visit will include a thorough review of your medical history, a discussion of your symptoms and concerns, and a physical examination of the relevant areas. Depending on your condition, Dr. Acevedo may order imaging, hearing tests, or other diagnostics. Plan to arrive 15 minutes early to complete any necessary paperwork.
If you have symptoms that are persistent, recurrent, or haven't improved with treatment from your primary care physician, an ENT specialist may be the right next step. Common reasons to seek ENT care include chronic sinus infections, recurring ear infections, unexplained hearing loss, a lump in the neck, thyroid nodules, or ongoing issues with your voice or swallowing.
Thyroid Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA) is a minimally invasive, outpatient procedure used to treat benign thyroid nodules. Using ultrasound guidance, a small needle delivers radiofrequency energy directly into the nodule, shrinking it over time without the need for surgery or general anesthesia. Dr. Acevedo is the only physician in West Texas currently performing this procedure.
Thyroid RFA is generally recommended for patients with benign (non-cancerous) thyroid nodules that are causing symptoms such as difficulty swallowing, a visible lump in the neck, or pressure in the throat. A full evaluation including ultrasound and biopsy results is needed to determine candidacy. Schedule a consultation with Dr. Acevedo to find out if RFA is right for you.
Most patients experience minimal discomfort during the procedure. Local anesthesia is used to numb the treatment area, and the procedure is performed in an outpatient setting. Some patients report mild soreness or swelling at the treatment site for a few days afterward, which typically resolves on its own.
Recovery is typically very quick. Most patients return to normal activities the same day or within 24 hours. Unlike traditional thyroid surgery, there are no large incisions, no hospital stay, and no need for thyroid hormone replacement in most cases. Your nodule will gradually shrink over the following weeks to months.
Clinical studies have shown Thyroid RFA to be highly effective, with many patients experiencing a 50 to 90 percent reduction in nodule size. Symptom relief is often significant, and the procedure has a strong safety profile. Results vary by individual and will be discussed in detail during your consultation.

Please bring your insurance card, a valid photo ID, a list of current medications, any relevant imaging or test results, and a list of questions or concerns you'd like to discuss. If you've been seen by another physician for the same issue, bringing those records can be very helpful.

We see patients of all ages, including infants and young children. Pediatric ENT concerns are very common, and early evaluation can make a significant difference in your child's health and development. If your child's pediatrician has recommended an ENT referral, or if you're concerned about your child's hearing, speech, or recurring ear infections, we're here to help.
Common pediatric ENT concerns include recurrent ear infections, fluid in the ears, hearing loss, snoring and sleep apnea, chronic sinus infections, and speech or language delays related to hearing issues. Ear tube placement is among the most frequently performed pediatric procedures.
It can help to explain the visit in simple, calm terms and let your child know that the doctor will just be taking a look to help them feel better.
